Getting the jump on post-high school studies has never been easier with more and more students exploring their options through the TAFE at School program.
A common theme in the minds of high school students and their parents is, what next?
Students are becoming savvy in their high school subject choices to ensure smooth transitions into whichever career pathways they choose to take after graduation, whether it takes the form of further education or entering employment.
Choosing a TAFE at School program or taking part in a high school’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) course is a great way to test a study area before committing to a Diploma qualification, and saving time into the bargain.
TAFE Queensland Brisbane offers a wide variety of course options through the TAFE at School program to give students pathways into traineeships, apprenticeships, Diploma programs and even university. There is no limit to the options available.
Pathways to university
Depending on the course and study area chosen, students can opt to participate in TAFE at Schools and still obtain their Queensland Certificate of Education and continue to study at TAFE and/or university.
Students are increasingly choosing to access university through VET. The benefits are numerous including adding a practical layer to your education, increasing your ‘work-readiness’ and getting you in front of paid employment opportunities sooner.
School based apprenticeships and traineeships
For those wishing to learn a trade, school-based apprenticeships or traineeships are a great way to kick start your career and start earning sooner.
Once you know which apprenticeship or traineeship is for you, source an employer who is willing to engage you in this capacity and let them know you want to study with us.
By securing an apprenticeship or traineeship, you will broaden your horizons by studying in an adult learning environment as well as spending time with industry professionals who are bursting with skills and experience to share with you.
Rhiannon has unlocked her future in the childcare industry. She completed her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30113) through the TAFE at School program and has just commenced her Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC50113) earlier this month.
Rhiannon says that choosing to study a TAFE at School course has allowed her to make a smooth transition into post-high school study, the introduction to TAFE through the TAFE at School program has given her the confidence to know what to expect and it means that she will be Diploma qualified and work-ready in one short year since graduating high school.
“I have always loved being with children and had been considering a career in childcare. Enrolling in the TAFE at School program meant I could dip my toe into the industry, to test it out and see if it was a good fit.
“Throughout the last couple of years, I have been placed at three childcare centres and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to soak up that experience. I also loved the classes held at TAFE which was a nice change from high school.
“I really relaxed into the program knowing that I had a plan in place for after high school. From early on, I had a good vibe about the course and felt confident to ask the teachers questions in class. My classroom was a really supportive place and had a strong community feel.”
