Break out the party hats, hang the streamers and cover that cake in chocolate and smarties because it’s our first birthday!
Unlike a human one-year-old, TAFE Queensland Brisbane is up and running, and we’re giving you the gift of our new blog, Spark.
To celebrate our first year of making great happen, we’ve pulled together 10 awesome things we’ve achieved since we hit the scene.
1. Where it all began
Let’s throw it back to where it all began – our first television commercial as TAFE Queensland. It’s got Kite String Tangle, fireworks, Australian Poetry Slam champ Luka Lesson and a whole lot of attitude.
2. We had the best graduation in Queensland
In December we threw a pretty swell graduation ceremony with plenty of singing, happy tears, a balloon drop and confetti bombs. In fact, it was so impressive that it was named the best corporate event in Queensland and has put our events team in the running to win the national award.
Remember that time we threw a party to celebrate the creators? Cre8 Brisbane 2014 showcased the emerging talents coming through our creative arts courses. More than 1500 people can to enjoy interactive events, speakers, music and ‘Day In the Life’ presentations. There was also a whole lot of rain, but that didn’t stop us having an amazing time! Check out some of our happy snaps!
4. We won some incredible accolades
In 2014 our College of Tourism and Hospitality (COTAH) snagged the title of Tourism Education and Training Provider of the Year at the Queensland Tourism Awards. If you think training with the best in the business is a great idea (hint: it is) check out the hospitality,or tourism and events courses we have on offer.
We took field trips to the next level with fashion tours to both New York and India. This year we’re ramping it up with an art tour to New York, a fashion tour to Hong Kong and China and a chance to pick up hospitality tips at the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne in Switzerland. You re-live the New York trip, or read about what’s coming up next in our study abroad and international internship programs.
6. Our students blew everyone’s minds
Our students have smashed it out of the ballpark in the past year. Jewellery apprentice Jason Cheetham won the 1st/2nd Year Apprentice Craftsmanship & Design Award for his multifunctional design piece, Transformer, at the JAA Jewellery Awards. Megan Rizzo, Victoria Reid and Nathan Smith all won silvers in the prestigious Australian Professional Photography Awards, while James Hazael’s three minute animation project, Le Tour, was screened at the Melbourne International Animation Festival and showcased at the Queensland season of the Australian International Animation Festival.
7. Our graduates continued to amaze us
The successes don’t end at graduation (that’s kind of the point right?) Alice Litzow launched her high-end swimwear collection Alcie May Designs, Lyly Chen finished in the top three in the country for bar skills at the World Skills Australia National Competition, and Tara Bain has made waves in the cooking world after being awarded the Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat winner, along with her assistant Rachel Male. Tara was also named the third best commis chef in the prestigious international competition, Bocuse d’Or.
8. We gave our students a whole lot of love
Those times TAFE Queensland Brisbane treated everyone around campus to segway tours, smoothies and snow cones, threw a cupcake party for winner of our Enrol to Win competition, and handed out hundreds of flowers to our amazing students on Valentine’s Day, because seriously, we love you guys.
9. We fooled the socks off the internet
Remember that time we fooled everyone when we “launched” our selfie short course on April Fools’ Day? You guys loved it as much as we did. We had a lot of people volunteering to teach the course so we’ll keep you guys in mind if we ever decide to go ahead with it.
10. You made great happen every day!
Yes, you. You all got out of bed early to come to class, turned in about a million assignments, missed out on parties to study, and dealt with more than one campus flood – all because you knew that hard work and dedication today would set you on the path to greatness. Congratulations on how far you’ve come! And thanks for choosing TAFE Queensland Brisbane to help you get there.
